what a stupid list… you’ve betrayed me stumbleupon!
What no Donnie Darko? If that’s not on the list than this list has not been thought out properly. There’s some crappy films too, only a couple but that purely subjective. Most are blinders. But still a bit miffed about no Donnie Darko…

So basically anything post 2003 isn’t a must-see…

Hmm…now that number actually seems kinda low.

No good movies after 2003?
Great list man!!!, how could you that?
If you did actually take the time to watch all these, you probably would die. Maybe that’s the point he’s trying to make?
This list is just a ripoff of a very comprehensive book by Steven Jay Scheider, published in 2004, hence its abrupt termination in 2003. The book gives a page about each of these films, with specific reasons why you should watch each film. I doubt even the author of this thread knows what half of these films are.
Yay for Say Anything being on here! but no Almost Famous or Donnie Darko? Bad.

Great list. I’m pleasantly surprised to see some of my favorites on there. I’ve seen 144 of those and there’s about a couple of dozen that I’ve been meaning to watch at some point.
I stopped counting at 666. I am amzed at how many ofthese movies I have seen. I am sure I saw more than I counted because I only selected the names of those movies whose plot lines I could actually remember.

To everyone who’s complaining about there being no Donnie Darko:
why!? I’ll admit that when I first saw this movie, it ended and I sat there awestricken. “Wow,” I thought, “this movie is so complex and thoughtful that I can barely understand it”.
After celebrating my confusion for a month and recommending it, I decided that I really wanted to fully understand the movie. I went online, spent hours, and alas, I understood the movie. However, in understanding it, I came to the conclusion that this movie is the biggest piece of crap ever produced. In order to understand Donnie Darko, you have to actually go outside of the movie and find “The Philosophy of Time Travel” (which I’m pretty sure is included in the director’s cut in special features but that’s not part of the movie).
A good movie is supposed to communicate a message by itself, not with necessitated literary aid.
This movie’s greatest accomplishment is using music and one liners (often questions followed by a “wow, never thought of it that way” silence, of course) to trick its viewers into thinking they’re watching a movie worth the title of film.
American Beauty is a film.
Sorry for the rant but that movie really pisses me off. haha.

Clueless???

No Donnie Darko or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind this list is bogus.

1001 is too big a number. That is why you can throw crap like Clueless in there. Just take every movie that has ever made money, is decent, or is a classic and throw them in a list, and bam! You have a post.
What? No “Manos: The Hands of Fate”???
This list is a piece of crap!

#594 The Wall – if you’re referring to Pink Floyds The Wall it didn’t come out till 1982. Also you put Dance Girls, Dance in and left out The Great Dictator in 1940.

that means you have 14,999 movies less than what I have here. but old movies.

Dan’s last blog post..This Week in Linktown [May 13 to May 20]
This list is crap, a lot of good movies for sure, but many movies that suck. The main reason I say crap is “NO FRIGGIN BIG LEBOWSKI” honestly? This tics me off and alone gives me the right to say that you’re list sucks. Plus Donnie Darko was awesome and is a must see, just because some dude didn’t get it right away doesn’t mean everyone else can’t.
And can you tell me please what happened after 2003 did you just die, because there are some good movies pass the year of 2003 and you didn’t mention any, hope you’re still alive
It’s missing Last Emperor (1987) and La Haine (1995).
There are way too many fossils on this list, IMHO.
Also, Jean de Florette (1986) and Manon de Sources (1986) are both missing (They’re kind of one movie tho, like GOdfather I and II). Surely there are some who might concur with my suggestions?
Add Hara-Kiri to that list. Near the top.

Ok… I know I am going to be missing a bunch here but honestly – How do you not include some of the classics from back in the day. Such as:
A Streetcar Named Desire (1951)
The Never Ending Story (1979)
Dirty Dancing (1982)
The Last Unicorn (1982)
Annie (1982)
Legend (1985)
The Goonies (1985)
St. Elmo’s Fire (1985)
Dead Poets Society (1989)
Scent of a woman (1992)
I know I am showing my age here but come on …You know that these are better movies then some on your list.
PLEASE ADD The GOONIES!

thanks for this list
There’s only about a dozen on this list worth seeing.
Was this list copied from a 2004 book, or is this some kind of master plan to impress girls?
The top 100 is a complete watse of time since Technicolor came out.
I am all for opinions, but I don’t agree with yours.
Except Faster, Pussy Cat! Kill! Kill!

No AMERICAN HISTORY X ?????????????????????????????????????????
You guys are all idiots, someone just took the list of a very well know book entitled, “The 1001 movies you have to see before you die” it’s goes in order from the birth of film year by year and focuses of the films that changed and developed film to the point where it is today! This list was compiled by a man who went to every acclaimed critic and a few directors, actors, producers, and general filmologists and had them make must see lists. Then he started ordering them and had to pick and choose what stays and what goes. In the grand scheme of all film there is NO FUCKING WAY boiler room, heart and souls, the patriot, the negotiator, or even the big lebowski (which is a great film one of my favs) or even half the shit you’ve guys bitched about would be on here. Yes they’re all great films but don’t have the significance that this list does. Also the book came out in 2003 hence it not going past that date. I’ll agree to two film brought up in all these postings: Irreversible and The Great Dictator!
Lastly all of you fuckers should go to a book store every now and again and maybe you wouldn’t be so enraged, like I am towards all of you. This list was made by people who know film far, far, FAR, FAR, FAR more than you ever will. And I’ve actually seen about 700 or so of these films and working to see them all! So I can safely say… SHUT THE FUCK UP! YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT. SEE THE FUCKING MOVIES AND YOU’LL UNDERSTAND!!!!!!!
Brian, you have a great point and you are probably very knowledgeable with movies but and the movies that i and other people listed about are just our opinion, you don’t have to get mad movie man. and by you seeing 700 of the movies, you are the shit. that is damn hard, i have seen more movies than anyone i know and i have only seen about 250.
[...] time around September I decide I was going to watch all the movies on the 1001 movies you must see before you die list. On the initial pass, I had seen around 113 of the movies. It was mostly modern films, but I [...]

“Tommy,” “The Devils,” “Lenny” “Billy Jack,” “The Passenger,” “Hearts and Minds” “Aria” —– I could go my whole life without seeing “Grease” or “Clueless.”
